DIETRO L'IMMAGINE. RITRATTI DI POVERTÀ RURALE
2 april - 6 july

Underlying all human experience is our instinct for survival and desire for wellbeing. To live without fear, hunger or suffering. To imagine how to improve our lives and have the means to bring about such a change. Yet every day 1.2 billion people – a fifth of the world's population – are unable to satisfy even their basic needs, let alone realise their dreams or aspirations. This exhibition is dedicated to the most numerous category of the world's poor – the 900 million poor men, women and children living in rural zones. They include farmers cultivating subsistence produce and shepherds, fishermen and seasonal workers, craftsmen and indigenous populations whose daily struggle for survival rarely captures world attention. IFAD is a specialised UN agency with the mandate of helping the poor in rural areas to combat poverty. In 2003 it organised this exhibition on the occasion of its 25th anniversary to render homage to the results achieved by poor in rural areas. Although these photos were taken in only 10 of the 100 countries in which IFAD is engaged in its daily struggle against poverty, the lives illustrated are representative of the lives of all poor people living in rural areas. This body of photographs is an anthology documenting efforts towards self-determination rather than situations of need. The images cause us to identify with their protagonists and feel compassion, as well as reminding us that poverty is not always what it seems to be at first sight.
