IN A RUSSIAN JUVENILE PRISON
27 april – 6 july

Between 2002 and 2003 Krauss got permission to take photographs inside various Russian institutions for minors, including orphanages and prisons. The outcome was a series of black and white portraits of adolescent boys and girls. The steadiness of Ingar Krauss' gaze causes them to escape from where they are and reach us, the viewers. Still faces, waiting, messengers of souls that do not know what is happening or what might happen. Through the eyes of the artist they seem to ask: Why me? The artist merely receives the question stamped on their faces and puts it to us: Why me? It is as if the final word has yet to be said, because they are young and in movement even in their silence. Curated by Suzy Shammah

Ingar Krauss
Ingar Krauss was born in East Berlin in 1965. He has been a photographer since 1990. He began by photographing his daughter, her friends, and Hannah, an orphan girl. His photographic search focuses on the human condition and in particular, childhood and adolescence. Krauss identifies with his subjects, often portrayed during that phase when neither mind nor body are completely defined and distinguished by a sense of sadness linked to the transformation in course. He uses these single biographies to create a sense of universal concertedness transforming the individual circumstances of the dramatic stories of these children into truths shared by the whole community. His solo exhibitions include: Von den Kindern weiss man nichts, (Fotoforum Innsbruck, Austria) Katzenauge, (Gallery Bodo Niemann, Berlin, Germany)
