Original Malawi is a visual itinerary overturning our categories of what is ordinary and extraordinary through the photos taken by people born and grown up in Malawi; young people who have never had any contact with the world of photography. Six young people aged from twenty to twenty-seven were given single-use cameras and invited to take photos of anything they found interesting, without making any particular suggestions and leaving them the maximum freedom of expression. The young people were randomly selected from a group expressing particular interest in the initiative. The result is a series of photos setting questions and inspiring understanding and curiosity for a people whose daily fight for survival has not impaired their sensitivity and imagination. The project concluded in November 2003, following a month of activity. It took place in the district of Balaka, in southern Malawi, with the help of the Christian parish of Balaka and the Italian NGO Ricerca e cooperazione.
The project was created especially for the 2004 edition of Rome’s International Photography Festival.
