WORLD PRESS PHOTO
7 may – 30 may

The World Press Photo of the Year award is one of the most important prizes for photojournalism. The jury of the 2004 World Press Photo award (47th edition) had to examine 63,093 images sent by 4,176 photographers from 124 countries. 2004 was a record year for entries to the competition. The use of digital technology represented another record. In fact, 80% of the photographs sent to Amsterdam were digital (69% in 2003). The jury gave awards to 62 photographers from 23 different nations in 10 different categories. The Photo of 2003 is by Jean-Marc Bouju, France, an Associated Press photographer. This colour photograph portrays an Iraqi man comforting his son in a prisoner of war camp. It was taken at Najaf, Iraq, on 31 March 2003. The photos are not only sensational images. The World Press Photo exhibition is also a historical document allowing us to relive the crucial events of our times. Its international character and the hundreds of thousands of visitors attracted annually confirm the ability of images to transcend cultural and linguistic differences to reach extremely high immediate communication levels. The World Press Photo Foundation, founded in 1955, is an independent international non-profit institution for photojournalism. Curated by Contrasto and the World Press Photo Foundation
