SGUARDI E RIFLESSI
7 may - 30 may

In 1978, before any of the artists taking part in this exhibition were even involved in photography, John Szarkowski organised an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York titled: Mirrors and Windows. American Photography since 1960. Szarkowski’s project was to focus on the two main trends of the intense and varied body of American photography of the previous twenty years: one developed by those using photography as a mirror in which to reflect themselves, the other practiced by those conceiving it as a window through which reality could be observed. Nearly thirty years after Szarkowski’s project, the situation of international photography is undoubtedly more complex, but in some subtle, concealed way, the two trends can still be traced despite the changed professional circumstances that have made the possibility of their mutual contamination vaster and more diversified. Both co-exist and intersect, appearing in the pages of newspapers and on the walls of galleries. Sguardi e riflessi does not forget the lesson of Mirrors and Windows: the “gaze” for those who have chosen reality as their field of investigation, the “reflection” for those preferring an introspective itinerary.
