GENTE DI CINEMA
8 april – 14 may
Elisabetta Catalano, a top Italian photographer, is celebrated for assiduously working with the world of art, culture and entertainment. From the 70s onwards, after specialising in the field of portrait photography, she captured many of the protagonists of the Italian artistic and cultural scene with her lens. On display are twenty-odd historical portraits, in black and white and colour, depicting the stars of the world of cinema. The carefully constructed images distinguished by a marked sense of beauty and search for formal perfection are the result of her familiarity with the world of fashion together with her subtle skill in capturing the most intimate facial expressions of her subjects.
Curated by: Valentina Moncada
Elisabetta Catalano began her activity as a photographer working for the leading periodicals (Il Mondo, Espresso, Vogue Italia and Vogue America). Her exhibitions include her first solo exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery in Rome, in 1975, a retrospective at Rome's Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in 1992, the exhibition of portraits of Fellini in 1994 at the Italian Cultural Institute, New York, and an exhibition on artists of the international avant-garde in Galleria Sperone, Rome (1999). During her most recent exhibition at the Accademia d'Arte of Via Ripetta in June 2003 her photographs hung alongside works by Franco Angeli, Mario Schifano, Plinio De Martis.
