“QUESTA È LA TUA LEZIONE” AFRO BURRI FONTANA
6 Aprile – 5 may
When you take photographs without the constrictions of professional commissions you can treat the camera like a tool for taking notes, without worrying about “wasting” shots or focusing on the key aspects and losing sight of the surrounding context. This total freedom is always evident in Giuseppe Loy's many shots. And it is in this spirit that he photographs Fontana, Burri and Afro. What captures his attention above all is the creative force emanated by human beings. He manages to restore this unique force to every face that he portrays (including those of his friends, children, beloved wife Rosetta, and unknown subjects), a force that is merely their creative potential.
Curated by: Francesca Antonini and Angelo Loy
Giuseppe Loy was born in Cagliari in 1928. In 1938 he moved to Rome, where he was to marry Rosetta Provera in 1954. Although working in the family firm, he always had time for his two great passions: poetry and photography. We could say that for around thirty years man and camera were inseparable. In 1965 his black and white photos appeared in Rome's Einaudi bookshop and in 1977 in the “Altre immagini” space in the Politecnico in Via Tiepolo. His images were published in two specialist magazines: Le Nouveau Photocinéma, No.13 May 1973, and Foto magazine No.1, January 1966. Giuseppe Loy died in Rome in 1981 leaving over 5000 shots. An archive of his photographs is in the process of being created.
