PICASSO E ALTRI RITRATTI
29 april – 20 july
The exhibition shows 98 portraits, dating from 1953 to the present day, allowing us to reconstruct the extraordinary story of Villers' meetings: Picasso, Chagall, Mirò, Dalì, Le Corbusier, Hartung, Arman, César, up to the young Ben Vautier and Jean Charles Blais all bear witness to his travels in the world of great contemporary art. His portraits of Prévert, Cocteau, Fellini, Bunuel, Lacan, Boulez, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean Marais, Pierre Restany amongst others, tell of his encounters with the stars of the extraordinary artistic milieu gravitating around Paris and the south of France. His art photography also documents his long-lasting friendships with Brassaï, Lartigue and Doisneau, the greatest French photographers of the last decades, with a series of extremely evocative images. The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive monograph dedicated to the artist, published by Ta Matete, with reproductions of all the works and texts by Michel Butor and Flaminio Gualdoni.
Curated by: prof. Flaminio Gualdoni
Born in Beaucourt, France, in 1930, André Villers began to work with Pablo Picasso in 1953, becoming his official photographer. At the same time, he started work on a series of portraits of painters and intellectuals which he published in “Le Lettres Francaises” and “Aujourd'hui”. In 1962 Berggruen published his remarkable portfolio Diurnes, photographic montages created together with Picasso and presented by Prévert. From this period onwards his works were exhibited all over the world.
