MEDITERRANEO. FOTOGRAFIE DI VIAGGIO DAL 1850 AL 1910
7 april - 6 july

A rich collection of antique photographs from the second half of the nineteenth century created by some of the great masters of the period, including Robert MacPherson, Giorgio Sommer and Ludovico Tuminello, on the theme of travel. From 1850 onwards, photography added to the fascination of travel and the discovery of foreign places, the possibility of creating an accurate record, far less idealised than the traditional gouaches, engravings or drawings of preceding periods. Yet these new images also betray the aesthetic tastes of nineteenth-century travellers and the search for the “picturesque” familiar to photographers of the times with their background in painterly themes. The natural beauty of untouched landscapes and the architectural beauty of urban views are heightened by the camera lens which enriched the sensation of memory with a semblance of reality. Starting in the south of France, travelling through Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey and northern Africa, we moderns can relive the atmosphere of the Grand Tour in Mediterranean lands, discovering landscapes that have now been lost, and places and architecture that are very different today: from the views of Venice, some of which coloured, to the ruins of Pompei, landscapes in Greece and the Bosphorus, to the Alhambra in Granada and views of Tunisia made by Ludovico Tuminello during the expedition organised by Marquis Orazio Antinori. The photographs, all original albumin and salt paper prints, come from the Italian Photography Foundation of Turin and the Municipal Photographic Archive in Rome. Curated by: Federica Pirani, Anita Margiotta, Barbara Bergaglio Production: Museo di Roma - Palazzo Braschi
